An ion-exchange resin or ion-exchange polymer is a resin or polymer that acts as a medium for ion exchange. It is an insoluble matrix (or support structure) normally in the form of small (0.25–1.43 mm radius) microbeads, usually white or yellowish, fabricated from an organic polymer substrate. The beads are typically porous, providing a large surface area on and inside them where the trapping of ions occurs along with the accompanying release of other ions, and thus the process is called ion exchange. There are multiple types of ion-exchange resin.

During distillation, water is boiled in a boiling chamber until it evaporates into steam. This steam is then captured and condensed into a clean container.

The majority of inorganic compounds and non-volatile molecules are unable to evaporate with water, and end up left behind in the boiling chamber.

Small-scale distillation units look a little like coffee pots. They consist of a boiling chamber, condensing chamber (or coils), and a storage container for the clean water.

The distillation process is as follows:

  1. Water is heated in a boiling chamber. The water is heated to a rolling boil, which causes evaporation and steam production.
  2. Steam leaves the boiling chamber. The steam from the boiling water rises through a vent into a stainless steel condenser. Any microorganisms, impurities and contaminants that are unable to convert into gas particles are left behind in the boiling chamber.
  3. Steam condenses. Once steam reaches the condenser, it is chilled by a fan until it turns back into water droplets. These droplets are now ready to be collected in a clean container - but there is one final filtration stage first.
  4. Remaining contaminants are removed. Any impurities that have evaporated and condensed with water can now be removed. Usually, an activated carbon filter will trap these contaminants using the process of adsorption.
  5. Water collects in a storage container. After passing through the filtration media, water will drip out of the distiller’s spout and into a holding container. This water is now clean, pure, and ready for use.

Distillation can remove a broad range of contaminants from water, including nitrate, iron, lead, hardness, and some microorganisms.

The overall effectiveness of distillation depends on the contaminants the water contains. For instance, some organic compounds, like benzene, have lower boiling points than water.

This means that these contaminants will end up re-contaminating water once it has condensed into liquid form. Most distillers use a filter media, typically activated carbon, to trap any lingering contaminants before water can leave the machine.

AdvertisementHow Long Does Water Distillation Take

Water distillation is not a fast process. The average countertop water distiller takes between 4 and 6 hours to produce a single gallon of purified water. Water is produced one droplet at a time.

This process can be accelerated using a larger distiller, which may be able to produce up to three gallons of water per hour, depending on the system. However, there is no speeding up the distillation process. For anyone looking to produce large batches of distilled water, the better alternative would be to use a water distillation plant.

What is a Water Distillation Plant?

A water distillation plant is a large-scale distillation solution that can be used for commercial or manufacturing purposes.

Distiller plants are a lot more capable than single-use countertop distillers. Depending on the number of units used, distillation plants may be able to produce up to hundreds of liters of purified water per hour.

There are a number of industries that may require large-scale production of distilled water. These include laboratories, cosmetic manufacturers, and automotive businesses. Distilled water may also be used in canning produce and brewing beer. Some bottled water manufacturers produce and sell distilled water.

A distillation plant offers a higher level of performance, which is essential for industries that require large quantities of distilled water in day-to-day operation.

Activated carbon is used to purify liquids and gases in a variety of applications, including municipal drinking water, food and beverage processing, odor removal, industrial pollution control.
Activated carbon is produced from carbonaceous source materials, such as coconuts, nutshells, coal, peat and wood.
The primary raw material used for activated carbon is any organic material with a high carbon content.
Adsorption is a process where a solid is used for removing a soluble substance from the water. In this process active carbon is the solid. Activated carbon is produced specifically so as to achieve a very big internal surface (between 500 - 1500 m2/g). This big internal surface makes active carbon ideal for adsorption. Active carbon comes in two variations: Powder Activated Carbon (PAC) and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC). The GAC version is mostly used in water treatment, it can adsorb the following soluble substances:

uncontrolled discharge of human wastes, while some countries have made massive investment in water supply projects there has been an overall under-investment in appropriate sanitation systems, which has resulted in harmful contamination of water resources, increased flooding and reduced health benefits from water investments. Finding a solution for the treatment and safe discharge of the wastewater is a difficult challenge because it entails integrated processes in which technical, economic and financial consideration come in play. The uniqueness of each situation makes it difficult to define a universal method for selecting the most adequate type of waste treatment plant. However, it is important to ensure that appropriate treatment standards are selected to meet local conditions, and alternative innovative technologies for treating wastewater are considered. Both conventional and innovative methods should be evaluated.

Overall the agricultural drains receive the bulk of the treated and untreated domestic pollution load. As a result many canals now also are contaminated with wastewater pollutants. A part from being the largest consumer of water, agriculture is also a major water polluter. Saline irrigation return-flows or drainage containing agrochemical residues are serious contaminants for downstream water users. Agricultural nitrate is contaminating groundwater. The disposal of liquid animal waste pollutes surface and groundwater, etc. This means a large number of organic and inorganic substances disturb the water quality, which are the main causes of eutrophication of the water body. They also proved to be powerful stimulants to algal growth and consequently formation of “algal blooms”. Algal blooms can affect the water quality in several ways.

2. Composition of typical wastewater

Watercourses receive pollution from many different sources, which vary both in strength and volume. The composition of wastewater is a reflection of the life styles and technologies practiced in the producing society (Gray, 1989). It is a complex mixture of natural organic and inorganic materials as well as man-made compounds. Three quarters of organic carbon in sewage are present as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, amino acids, and volatile acids. The inorganic constituents include large concentrations of sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, chlorine, sulphur, phosphate, bicarbonate, ammonium salts and heavy metals (Tebbutt, 1983, Horan, 1990, Lim et al., 2010).

Different sources of pollutants include “Discharge of either raw or treated sewage from towns and villages; discharge from manufacturing or industrial plants; run-off from agricultural land; and leachates from solid waste disposal sites” these sites of pollution have problems so that a solution is sought (Horan, 1990). Scarcity of water, the need for energy and food are forcing us to explore the feasibility of wastewater recycling and resource recovery (De la Noüe and De Pauw, 1988).
