Pharmaceutical Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)

Waste water generated by Pharmaceutical and personal care industries and Drug manufacturing units contain various solvents, ingredients and other solid, hazardous wastes.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing has until recently been generally considered to not significantly contribute to environment pollution on the one hand, and to not pose any environmental threat of consequence, on the other. Recent findings however suggest the contrary: certain manufacturing facilities across the globe have been determined to discharge into the environment significantly high levels of APIs, beyond previously established levels, thereby causing pollution. Antibiotics constitute a significant proportion of APIs found in the environment, and have become a class of contaminants of emerging concern. They have been detected at concentrations between a few ng/L to µg/ L, as well as at levels as high as mg/L range in both industrial effluents and their receiving water bodies, including surface and groundwater across various countries of the world High levels of the antibiotic oxytetracycline were detected at 600 mg/L in the ETP discharge of a PMC in Asia. In developing nations like Nigeria, there is little or no evidence of regulatory disposal of pharmaceutical wastes, and a large number of PMCs either lack an ETP, or installed ones are non-functional. Unregulated methods of waste disposal have resulted in the occurrence of APIs in high concentrations beyond tolerable levels. Undoubtedly, the implication for environmental health regarding soil and water quality is negative. Also, some authors have speculated that industrial use of pharmaceuticals is a major source of environmental pollution. Moreover, studies implicating pharmaceutical ETP as a real source of pollution are well documented.

Food crisis in some African countries like Nigeria has resulted in elevated small scale cropping including subsistence farming. Consequently, there is increased reliance on irrigation from various non-precipitation water sources including polluted ponds, rivers, and streams. Part of the strategy to augment rainwater is the use of industrial wastewater and their receiving water bodies. In the study area, PMCs discharge untreated effluent heavily laced with APIs including antibiotics into surrounding water bodies. Small-scale soybean (Glycine max) production has recently experienced a significant increase, mostly to address the endemic malnutrition in affected regions. Soybean (Glycine max) is an economical legume, containing twice the protein content of beef and poultry, yet costing only a fifth of their price. Metronidazole (2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole- 1-ethanol) belongs to the antibiotic class nitroimidazole. Used for the management of both human and animal diseases of various causative organisms,it is one of the most common and widely consumed over the counter (OTC) antibiotics, thus its production in very large quantities . Levels as high as 34 mg/L were detected in the ETP sample of a PMC in Lagos, Nigeria. Metronidazole does not readily adsorb to sediments or soil, explaining its high availability and potential uptake by plants. Furthermore, it has been reported to have low biodegradability in the environment.

With milk components also wastewater contain detergents and sanitizing agents which are result of cleaning process increase the concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD). There are many ways to reduce the BOD and COD, but biological treatment is the primary mean. Both aerobic and anaerobic technologies have been used, while anaerobic treatment of wastewater has emerged as viable and economical alternative over the conventional aerobic treatment particularly for high BOD. In aerobic technologies number of different treatment methods are there like, activated sludge, sequencing batch reactor, rotating biological contactors trickling filter. In anaerobic treatment methods are up flow sludge blanket (UASB), anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBR), continuous-flow stirred tank reactor, hybrid anaerobic digesters, contact reactor, up flow and down flow anaerobic filter, and two-stage systems that separate the acid-forming and methane forming. There are many cases where aerobic and anaerobic processes are combined in one single treatment system. Membrane technology is alternatives to bio treatment being used for BOD reduction in dairy wastewaters which replaces secondary clarifiers in the waste treatment plants with membranes.

According to Department of Environment, effluent must be according to the quality standards set by the government and so the ETP should be established and directed accordingly.

Treatments:- various strategies are being used for waste water treatment

Brine Treatment: This technology includes the membrane filtration processes, ion exchange processes, evaporation processes etc. every process has its own unique task to filter the water. Basically brine treatment is used to remove the dissolved salt ions or other metals from the water and to maximize the recovery of fresh salts & water.

Solids Removal: solids can be removed through filtration or extra filtration to make the water re-usable.

Removal of Bio-Degradable organics: It is based on the sewage treatment used to clean the rain water etc.

Oils and grease removal: Before using membrane filtration, skimming process can be used to remove the oil or grease from the upper surface of water. Skimming is cost-efficient method to clean the oiling or grease water through the cleaning depends on the solids dissolved in the water. Many oil refineries, chemical plants, natural gas plants are producing effluent water which contains high amount of oils, chemicals & grease etc. These industries use a device called API oil water separator salt which separates the oil and wastewater by knowing the gravity difference between them. API denotes the American petroleum institute who had published the standards to design this separator.

Activated sludge process: It is used to treat sewage & industrial waste water through the following process:-

Aeration tank is used to inject air in to the mixed waste water

A settling tank is used to settle the waste sludge.

7.1.1.2 Treatment process for highly concentrated fecal wastewater

Multistage anaerobic treatment process or conventional treatment process combining with anaerobic and aerobic treatment processes can be used to treat high-concentration fecal wastewater. Because the treatment process is simple and easy to manage, the expected treatment effect can be achieved.

Multistage anaerobic treatment process can be adopted (Fig. 7.5) when the treated high-concentration fecal sewage is discharged into an urban drainage system [20].

While the combined treatment process of multistage anaerobic and aerobic treatment (Fig. 7.6) can be adopted when the treated high-concentration fecal sewage is required to meet the secondary discharge standard stipulated in the current national standard “Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard” (GB8978-1996) [20].

Abstract

Anaerobic treatment is one of the oldest biological treatment processes having first been practiced over a century ago. A sound knowledge of kinetics is a must for the rational design, performance optimization, stable operation, as well as better process control for the successful application of anaerobic treatment technologies. The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of long-established, fundamental knowledge as well as the current status of kinetics and modeling of anaerobic treatment and biotransformation processes. After a short description of the salient aspects of the four conversion subprocesses (i.e., hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis), as well as discussion of ultimate biodegradability considerations, mathematical expressions for the kinetics of each subprocess and a summary of kinetic values are provided. Then, concepts used for the modeling of anaerobic treatment processes spanning from simple ones, based on the rate-limiting step approach, to more complex, structured models are summarized. Anaerobic biotransformation considerations relative to the role of the biotransformed compounds in the overall microbial metabolism (i.e., growth-linked vs. cometabolic biotransformation) are discussed and then kinetics and modeling of biotransformation processes that take such considerations into account are discussed. Two illustrative examples related to microbial reductive dehalogenation are provided.
